FAQ

  • Most of our classes are suitable for beginners and all levels, however, we recommend you take a few other classes to learn the basics before starting Vinyasa (where we move quickly and introduce more challenging postures). Hatha, Slow Flow, any of our Yin or combination classes are all great places to start. Please review class descriptions so you have a general idea of what to expect.
  • It is advisable not to eat 2 hours before class…if you do need to eat, have a light and healthy snack.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing that is not too loose nor too tight. You want to be able to move freely without restriction.
  • Please bring your own mat if you have one. We do have mats for rent and several options available purchase at the studio. We also have other props including blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, pillows, eye pillows and cushions for no charge.
  • All breathing (inhaling and exhaling) is done through your nose…if for any reason this is difficult for you, breathe as you would normally. Always try to exhale 1 or 2 breaths longer than you inhale.
  • If it hurts or doesn’t feel right, don’t do it! A challenge is good, pain is not! If an asana (posture) is painful for you, come to a resting pose and see your teacher after class. Pose variations can be customized as needed.
  • Please leave your shoes in the outside waiting area before entering the studio. Yoga is performed in your bare feet to keep you from slipping during the postures and it puts you in closer contact with the earth’s energy.
  • Close your eyes…visualize! Imagine yourself doing the posture and feel the energy that it brings.
  • Many people find it more comfortable to keep the hips elevated on a blanket during seated postures-experiment with props!
  • During savasana (final relaxation at the end of class) your body will begin to cool down rapidly. You may want to have a blanket nearby to make you more comfortable. The body and mind will relax more deeply when they are warm.
  • You are not in competition with anyone else in the class or even yourself! Just do what feels right at the moment. Yoga is all about being in the present.
  • We are here to help so please ask any questions before or after class.
  • Relax and Enjoy…this is your time!

Studio Etiquette

  • Please pre-register in advance for all classes, trainings, workshops and special events. Pre-registration is used to help determine cancelations in inclement weather and we do reserve the right to cancel any regular class if minimum registration is not met at least 90 minutes in advance. Many of our teachers commute to the studio and we honor their time and commitment to their families.
  • Please turn off all cell phones before entering the studio area. They can be heard ringing even if they are in the reception area.
  • Shoes are not worn in the studio area. Please remove them and leave in the reception area along with other personal items. The door is locked after the start of each class for the safety and security of everyone and their belongings.
  • The studio is open 15 minutes prior to the start of each class. Although we may be there earlier, we use that time to open up the studio and prepare ourselves for the class. Please use the time prior to class to register and get settled. Every effort will be made to begin and end the class in a timely manner.
  • The studio door is locked 5 minutes after the start of each class. If you arrive within 5 minutes, please enter the studio area and situate yourself quietly and check-in after class (unless it is your first visit to the studio in which you need to complete a waiver prior to participating in class).
  • Please no gum or food in the studio area, but do bring a water bottle for proper hydration.
  • Many people are very sensitive to strong fragrances…please keep this in mind before coming into the studio and refrain from wearing perfumes or colognes. Alternatively, if you are one who is sensitive, it is helpful to inform us so we know to refrain from incense or essential oils while you are at the studio.
  • If you must leave prior to the end of class, please inform your teacher beforehand and do so as quietly as possible prior to savasana (final relaxation at the end of class).
  • Please no talking during class. While we want you to have fun and we may inject humor, side conversations are distracting to teachers and other students. Please utilize the time before or after class to socialize with your fellow yogis in the reception area or Green Room.
  • The studio is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please make an effort to bring everything out that you came in with and check the Lost & Found bin for missing items.
  • Please do not leave any valuables next to or on your mat, such as eyeglasses, that could be broken as we assist and adjust your postures. Glasses may be placed on top of a block.
  • Please extend everyone the same courtesy and respect that you would wish for yourself.
  • Relax, enjoy and let us know if there is anything we can do to enhance your experiences at Banyan Tree Yoga!
