FAQ

  • It is advisable not to eat 2 hours before class…if you do eat, have a light and healthy snack.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing that is not too loose nor too tight.  You want to be able to move freely without restriction.
  • Please bring your own mat if you have one.  We do have mats for rent and several options available purchase at the studio.  We also have blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, pillows, eye pillows and cushions for use free of charge.
  • All breathing (inhaling and exhaling) is done through your nose…if for any reason this is difficult for you, breathe as you would normally. Always try to exhale 1 or 2 breaths longer then you inhale.
  • If it hurts or doesn’t feel right, don’t do it! A challenge is good, pain is not! If an asana (posture) is painful for you, stop immediately and see your instructor after class. Asanas can be modified to your needs.
  • Please leave your shoes in the outside waiting area before entering the studio. Yoga is performed in your bare feet. The reason for this is two-fold:  It will keep you from slipping during the postures;  Doing yoga in your bare feet puts you in closer contact with the earth’s energy.
  • Close your eyes…visualize! Imagine yourself doing the posture and feel the energy that it brings.
  • Some people find it more comfortable to sit on a small pillow or rolled up towel or blanket when we are doing seated postures. Try it and see.
  • During the relaxation portion of the class (the last several minutes) your body will begin to cool down rapidly. You may want to have a blanket nearby to make you more comfortable. The body and mind will relax more deeply when they are warm.
  • Yoga is non-competitive. Remember, you are not in competition with anyone else in the class or even yourself! Just do what feels right at the moment. Yoga is all about being in the present.
  • We are here to help so please ask any questions before or after class.
  • Relax and Enjoy…this is your time!

Studio Etiquette

  • Please turn off all cell phones before entering the studio area.
  • Shoes are not worn in the studio area. Please remove them and leave in the waiting area along with other personal items.
  • The studio area will be open 15 minutes prior to the start of each session.  Although we may be there earlier, we use that time to open up the studio and prepare ourselves for the class.  Please use the 15 minutes prior to class to register and get settled.  Every effort will be made to begin and end the class in a timely manner. Occasionally we all run late; if that is the case, please enter the studio area and situate yourself quietly… you would be amazed how distracting unrolling a mat can be once you are into the rhythm of the class!  We may lock the door during some classes, so please make every effort to arrive on time.
  • Please no gum or food in the studio area, but do bring a water bottle for proper hydration.
  • Many people are very sensitive to strong fragrances…please keep this in mind before coming into the studio area.  Alternatively, if you are one who is sensitive, it is helpful to inform us so we know to refrain from incense or essential oils while you are at the studio.
  • If you must leave prior to the end of the session, please inform your teacher beforehand and do so as quietly as possible prior to the relaxation portion of the class.
  • Please no talking during class.  While we want you to have fun and we may inject humor, side conversations are distracting for others.
  • The studio is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  Please make an effort to bring everything out that you came in with.
  • Please do not leave any valuables next to our on your mat, such as eyeglasses, that could be broken as we assist and adjust your postures.
  • Please extend everyone the same courtesy and respect that you would wish for yourself.
  • Relax, enjoy and let us know if there is anything we can do to enhance your experiences at Banyan Tree Yoga!
